Napjainkban hely\u00e9n egy kedvelt, hangulatos k\u00e1v\u00e9z\u00f3, a Wellington & Pie m\u0171k\u00f6dik, mely berendez\u00e9s\u00e9vel – \u00e9s most m\u00e1r a ki\u00e1ll\u00edt\u00e1ssal is – megid\u00e9zi az egykori bolt szellem\u00e9t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World of the C\u00edvis,<\/em> the renewed local history exhibition in D\u00e9ri Museum, sheds new light on the history of Debrecen, its particular customs and inhabitants, presenting a rich source of archaeological finds and archival materials from the first traces of civilisation in the area, through the time of the emerging  middle classes to the modern era of the fin de si\u00e8cle. Such an exhibition is always a curated selection of an abundance of materials, leaving exciting finds in storage for the lack of space. That is why we are delighted to present a satellite exhibit outside the museum, in an unusual but all the more authentic location: the Rickl House, right in the middle of Debrecen\u2019s historical high street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facsimile documents, contemporary photographs and family portraits give us a glimpse into the life of the Rickl family, generations of merchants and wholesalers who operated a colonial goods, spice and general store, addressed to The Emperor of Turkey, at 39 Piac utca (Market Street) for almost 130 years. After decades of stormy history and changing businesses, the former shop has been refitted to a layout close to the original, now home to a popular, cosy caf\u00e9, Wellington Coffee & Pie. The d\u00e9cor and the small exhibition in the gateway and inside the caf\u00e9 evoke the spirit of the once prosperous enterprise of the industrious Rickl family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sz\u00e1mtalan anekdota \u00e9s \u00e9rdekess\u00e9g f\u0171z\u0151dik a h\u00e1zhoz \u00e9s a t\u00e1gas emeleti lak\u00e1sban \u00e9l\u0151 gazdag kalm\u00e1rcsal\u00e1dhoz. Csak tal\u00e1lgatni lehet, hogy val\u00f3ban kardot cser\u00e9lt-e a hadba vonul\u00f3 Pet\u0151fivel az egyik Rickl fi\u00fa, vagy hogy a keresked\u0151 inasok t\u00e9nyleg a mennyezetr\u0151l f\u00fcgg\u0151 kit\u00f6m\u00f6tt c\u00e1pa sz\u00e1j\u00e1ban tartott\u00e1k-e fontos irataikat. Az viszont t\u00e9ny, ennek a h\u00e1znak a kertj\u00e9ben vetettek el\u0151sz\u00f6r burgony\u00e1t, \u00e9s az egyik els\u0151 utcai l\u00e1mp\u00e1s ezen az utcai homlokzaton gy\u00falt ki Debrecenben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome, you are in the right place!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, this house was the spice and colonial goods trading house of the Rickl family who were of German origin. The shop, addressed to the Turkish emperor, sold exotic goods as well as paint and agricultural commodities. There are countless anecdotes and curiosities associated with the house and the wealthy merchant family in the spacious upstairs apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can only speculate whether one of the Rickl boys really exchanged swords with Pet\u0151fi, who was off to war, or whether the merchant apprentices really kept their important documents in the mouth of a stuffed shark hanging from the ceiling. But it is a fact that potatoes were first sown in the garden of this house, and one of the first street lamps in Debrecen was lit on this very fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J\u00f3zsef Zelmos Rickl II (1818\u2013<\/em>1876). Grandson of the shop founder Rickl, who, according to the family legend, was the man with whom S\u00e1ndor Pet\u0151fi swapped his sword. He continued to increase the shop\u2019s turnover and the number of branches. He supported the creation of the Debrecen Music Academy with a considerable amount of money.

Gyula Rickl (1851\u20131922). Son of Antal Vilmos Rickl. After his university studies he was employed at the Hungarian Royal Ministry of Justice as a ministerial advisor. Later, as State Secretary for Justice, he became the Chief Inspector of Hungarian prisons. In 1896 he was given a noble rank by Franz Joseph with the first name Bellyei. He was also one of the founders of the Debrecen Hunting Society.

You\u2019re in a good spot, standing in the portal of the historical Rickl House<\/em> \u2013 a stately townhouse built in the 1820s as the home and business premises of a German merchant family. Successive generations operated the popular colonial goods store, The Emperor of Turkey,<\/em> until 1913, selling exotic goods, spices, paint, and even agricultiural produce at times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amusing stories abound in the family lore \u2013 some likely the stuff of legends, others more factual. Did one of the young Rickl sons really swap swords with the great Hungarian poet Pet\u0151fi, on his way to the battlefield in 1849, where he would prematurely perish in the war of independence? Did the shop assistants hide their most intimate documents in the jaws of the stuffed shark hanging from the ceiling? Hard to prove, unlike the fun trivia that potato was first planted in the back garden and gas lights lit up on the facade of the Rickl House for the first time in Debrecen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
